#pclo10 – PodCamp London was a Camper’s Delight

IMG_5896

"Hold on, let me text you..." "Oh hi, got it"

As many of you know… PodCamp London 2010 (hashtag #pclo10 for Twitter) was this past weekend. In my opinion, it was a resounding success.

A PodCamp is “…an open community for new and social media enthusiasts and professionals including bloggers, podcasters, social networkers, and anyone curious about new media to share and learn.” Anyone can submit a presentation. Anyone can attend a presentation. Anyone can leave a presentation if they are not interested. It makes for a great open platform for attendees and presenters to discuss their thoughts and opinions on everything new media, and often has new presentations being added when you least expect it.

While last year’s PodCamp London 2009 was quite impressive, with an overwhelming number of campers attending, the venue was just too small. This year’s PodCamp was fortunate enough have access to the newly constructed Convergence Centre off Windemere road by the University of Western Ontario. It proved to be a very suitable venue, asides from Serious problem with #pclo10: no wifi or 3g in the bathrooms” via Twitter User @Phronk (Phronk actually spoke at Podcamp about his blog “Putting Weird Things in Coffee“. It was both hilarious and impressive at the same time).

PodCamp received strong support from the community, with community sponsors such as TechAlliance stepping up to the plate. Industry sponsors such as rTraction (who developed an app to track and monitor campers tweets, and then assign them an avatar that you could see on screen, or blow-up if you used the hashtag #bye) and ResIM (who sponsored the after party at the Ceeps) also played a strong role in the unique success of the event.

The attendance was outstanding and the organizing committee did a fantastic job ensuring all went smoothly. I for one, definitely look forward to PodCamp London 2011.

The-Amazing-Bill’s-Fantastical-New-Photoshop-Tool…

The Amaaaazing Bill.

The Amaaaazing Bill.

So recently, via Facebook, I heard about a sneak preview of a new Photoshop tool in development. So of course, interested as always, I watched the attached YouTube video.

The tool is called the “Content-Aware Fill” and it performs magic. Really, it performs MAGIC.

They should have called it:

“Amazing-Bill’s-Super-Fantastical-Magic-Wand-That-Fills-in-Areas-of-Photos-Where-There-is-Currently-Nothing-and-is-Therefore-Going-to-Save-Soooo-Much-Time…IF-it-Works-Like-it’s-Supposed-to” Tool.

I don’t know who Bill would be in this case, BUT if this tool really works like they demonstrate in the following video, things will change and Photoshop users everywhere will gasp in amazement.

This is the kind of stuff they would show in CSI and people that know anything at all about computers and the current available software and logic would say to themselves “they can’t do that…”.

Well, maybe they can.

Visibility, The Soft Sell and Social Networking

Another week has gone by and thousand of blogs have been created, probably more.

... So this is how Social Networking works!

... So this is how Social Networking works!

Ivan Misener, founder of BNI, recently released a PodCast #146: Visibility Through Touchpoints. He had a guest on the show named Rick Itzkowich (I can’t say it either). Rick specializes om helping business people triple their referral using LinkedIn to complement their offline networking.

Rick Give’s some facts before he discusses one of his new products in detail.

  • In any sale, only 3-10% of people are ready to buy now.

  • People need to be “touched” (aka exposed to the product/service/individual) 5-12 times before they buy (*these are stages of a soft sell – repetition is key)

  • You need a system that helps you build relationships by “touching” people on a regular basis with content they want to receive.

No wonder he is such an advocate of Linked In.

Rick has 500+ connections and 91 Recommendations!! To put it in perspective, I have a strong LinkedIn Profile. However, I only have 146 148 Connections and 8+ Recommendations. He’s good.

His PodCast talks mostly about one of his products, QuoteActions so this got me looking around the web for other Linked In quick facts.

I read an article called “Ten Ways to Use Linked In”. They didn’t need 10 points, so here’s the Coles notes version in 3 points.

  • Increase Your Visibility: add connections and participate to rank higher and show up on search results (internal/external). Having a higher profile on Linked In ensures that other people find you on google, and find what you WANT them to find – your professional credentials.

*Tip: don’t use the default URL Linked In gives you, customize it to your Name.

  • Increase Your Odds – Research: This one I like! In any situation, interviewing, sales or more – research your perspective boss/colleague/sales agent and find out more about them, who they know and who they’ve worked with.

If looking into working with a company, gauge their health by searching them on Linked In. Fin out how many employees they have, how much business they do and who they’ve worked with.

You would be surprised what you can find out and how it can relate to opinions, strategies and success!

  • Improve Your Relationships: help people find you and learn more about you by filling out your profile fully. Just like in point 2, make sure people can find out more about you, who you know and your professional credentials. Give them the information in an open forum, and they will likely not have to look anywhere else. Add more than just your current occupation so that past connections will find you, who knows, they may be of more benefit than you think!

So don’t be shy! Utilize your resources and increase your exposure. If you went to a networking event, but sat in the corner and didn’t talk to anyone, you probably would not be very satisfied with the results. The same is true with any social media site including Linked In. It’s not enough to just create your account and expect it to work for you. USE your account. Participate in discussions, join groups, update your status, add connections and watch your network start to grow!

You would be surprised at the positive results you can achieve.

If anyone needs an accountant, I probably know a few more now…

Raise your hand if you use Twitter...

Raise your hand if you use Twitter...

Recently I gave a guest lecture at one of the many colleges in London, Ontario.  They wanted me to talk about Internet Marketing and explain some of the principles, practices and usages of IM to their Sales course. After researching a little more, and talking with the Professor for the course – a well established Financial Services man and networking extraordinaire – I learned that most of the students were Accountants. Now, call me crazy, but most people don’t go to their accountant for Internet Marketing advice. So I took a different route.

Most of the class was graduating. Soon.

Naturally, students about to graduate from college are looking into the future, and out of everything their studying and working towards one question is going to resonate louder than any other, “How am I going to get a job?”.  Well Internet Marketing was not going to help them secure a job, but some of the practices, tools and principles might. I decided to focus on that.

Since the focus of this particular lecture was intended to be on Internet Marketing it was obvious that to make my lecture not only relevant to the class material, but also helpful to the students, I would need to talk about something more up-to-date than what paper to print your resume on. So we discussed Social Media and the affects it can have on obtaining and maintaining a job.

In my lecture, I focused on tools they (or anyone for that matter) can use to get a job. Some of these tools were obvious: have an updated resume, network, remove compromising pictures from your Facebook (the sooner the better). Others were not so obvious. Here’s a few facts about Social Media that most people don’t consider when looking for a job:

45% of Employers use Social Media when considering an Applicant…
11% of Employers Plan on Using Social Media in the Future
53% Won’t hire you if they see Provocative photos and info
44% Won’t hire you if they see shared content with booze or drugs
35% Won’t hire you if they see bad-mouthing of former employers
14% Won’t hire you if Emoticons are used in direct communication

“Alright class, time to pick your jaws up off the floor a go remove last years St. Patty’s Day extravaganza from your Facebook photos…”

From here I went on to talk about the facts about Social Media, focusing on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In. Many people hadn’t heard of Linked In, arguably the most valuable SM tool any business professional can use to build their network, stay connected, get involved and get exposure. So we discussed Linked In. And we discussed Linked In. And still, we discussed Linked In. I displayed a typical Linked In profile (mine, actually) and explained how these students can utilize various features on Linked In to start getting exposure for themselves, get connected with the right people, and of course, search for Jobs.

I think this resonated with the class because in only a few hours my Linked In was flooded with requests to connect.

Well, I hope my lecture was a little more helpful than their originally scheduled “Internet Marketing for Accountants” lecture. And if anyone needs an accountant, I probably know a few more now.

2 Torches 1 Guy

The other week I attended a great seminar put on by the London Small Business Centre on Doing Business with The Olympics and among the perks of attending this seminar was having the opportunity to not just one Olympic Torch but TWO!!! One that had been used in the torch run leading up to the XX Winter Olympic Games that was held in Torino, Italy in 2006 and one that is to be used in the run leading up to the XXI Winter Olympic Games in  Vancouver, Canada in 2010. And YES there is at least one picture…

Darda Sales (Gold Medalist) and Rob Little (Creative City) holding the Vancouver 2010 Torch

Another perk was getting to meet London, Ontario’s own Paralympic athlete Darda Sales (also shown in picture). More pictures from the seminar can be found in the Small Business Centre’s Photo Galleries.

I do have to say holding two Olympic Torches in one day is not to bad of a day!

What is a Snippet?

Snippets in search engines is a term that few people know and even a surprising number of web professionals don’t know. However, even the most novice of web users will see and utilize snippets on a daily basis.

So what are Snippets? A Snippet is the small grouping of information that makes up an individual listing from the results of a search engine query. Here I have posted an example of the Snippet for Creative City from a Google search. more »

What is twitter? What does it have to do with my business?

As the business development manager for Creative City I spend a lot of time with our clients on a post launch strategy. These discussions include site maintenance, updates,  setting up links to their websites, finding on-line directories,  the who, why, what and how of blog entries and generally showing our clients how to draw qualified leads to their websites.  Aside from proper search engine optimization (SEO) development and content I feel that a good social media strategy is the best way for companies/professionals to gain exposure to themselves online.  In a time where the economy is in a recession and advertising budgets of businesses are being cut; social media is hands down the most cost effective advertising there is. more »

Understanding the Web – made easy by Creative City

“I don’t really need a website do I?”

“Oh, a website won’t really help my business, it’s not that important”

“Nobody will ever find me on the web, why would they?”

Questions. Common questions. FAR too common.

To me and to a lot of people, the web just makes sense. Maybe it’s my generation. Maybe it’s the fact that, well, that’s what I do. But for far too many people –consumer and business people alike– the web doesn’t. So, why not clear up a few things, and in true Creative City fashion, lets do it in a flowchart. more »
